The Making of a Collection: The Sensory in Design and Architecture
Wednesday, Feb 12, 2020, 6-8 pm

Fourth discussion of The Making of a Collection, Demisch Danant’s salon-style series focusing on the process of collecting; and the research and expertise, both professional and personal, behind the making of a meaningful collection. Guest speakers will share their stories and their knowledge, representing different points of views.

In tandem with our current exhibition Color Diaries, this discussion will explore the sensory perceptions and experiential qualities of design and architecture.  What is the importance of humanizing a space? What elements play a role, and what type of interactions are created?  How is nature involved? A responsive environment interacts with people, engages them with their surroundings, and elicits an emotional connection—impacting the way one feels, thinks, and behaves.

Color Diaries focuses on the interaction of color, form, and space through a narrative of upholstered furniture from the French 1960s and 70s, when innovative designers sought to inject softness and comfort to humanize the strict architecture of the times.

Joining Suzanne Demisch, the guest speakers all have different perspectives, approaches, and expertise with the sensory spectrum. The discussion is salon-style and we encourage all to participate.

Moderated by Glenn Adamson, Senior Scholar at the Yale Center for British Art. His book Fewer Better Things: The Hidden Wisdom of Objects was published in 2018.

Dung Ngo- Editor in Chief of August, A Journal of Travel +Design

Andrew Zuckerman- Photographer, filmmaker, and creative director. Much of Andrew’s work is concerned with the intersection of nature and technology which he has examined through multiple international books and exhibitions. He recently co-founded The Slowdown, a multi-platform media company to explore culture, nature, and the future.

Seth Cameron- Recently named Executive Director of the Children’s Museum of the Arts, Seth Cameron is a painter, writer and educator as well as a founder of the artist collective, The Bruce High Quality Foundation. His most recent exhibition, The Fair Mountain, at Nina Johnson Gallery in Miami, uses relationships of color to illustrate a fable of our own relationship to the natural world.
