For Basel 2013, Demisch Danant will present a selection of works by Philippon & Lecoq of 1957 to 1962 accompanied by early works by Sheila Hicks.

Inspired by the teachings of the modernist masters of the Union des Artistes Modernes (U.A.M.), Philippon and Lecoq employed modern materials and techniques to improve the daily life of French citizens in the challenging postwar climate. Their furniture combines minimalism with a pervasive sense of architectural refinement and elegance. The couple approached interiors with an almost puritanical sense of functionalism, but succeeded in creating extremely efficient environments that were still comfortable and inviting.

After studying fine art at Yale under the tutelage of Josef Albers, Sheila Hicks established herself as one of the most innovative textile artists of the 20th century. Hicks is renowned for her painterly approach to textile design and an ability to craft environments through the unlikely medium of fiber. She has collaborated with prominent architects including Luis Barragan, Ricardo Legorreta and SOM. Her work defies categorization, simultaneously addressing several related mediums including painting, design, craft, installation and architecture.
