Demisch Danant and Galerie Anne-Sophie Duval present:
Paris-New York: Galleries in Residence
A transatlantic conversation of iconic French design

Demisch Danant: 5, Quai Malaquais, Paris
October 16-November 4, 2023

Galerie Anne-Sophie Duval: 30 W 12th Street, New York
November 8-December 9, 2023

New York | Paris–Demisch Danant (New York) and Galerie Anne-Sophie Duval (Paris) are pleased to announce a transatlantic collaboration where the two design institutions will trade spaces in the final months of 2023 in celebration of intergenerational, iconic French design.

Poetically steeped in the past, both galleries have rich histories in site and subject–as chance would have it, both are housed in former bookstores. Tied together by a shared affinity and admiration for timeless and iconic design, Demisch Danant and Galerie Anne-Sophie Duval (now run by Duval’s daughter, Julie Blum) are some of the most respected establishments in their respective cities for 20th century design. Each with their own niche expertise–Demisch Danant for post-war and Galerie Anne-Sophie Duval for the Art Deco period–together, the two galleries offer an interconnected education of French innovation in the world of design and the decorative arts.

“The idea of collaborating with Julie first came to light in 2020 in conversation about the impact of the Art Deco period on the designers who emerged after WWII, notably how young Maria Pergay was sometimes referred to as the Eileen Gray of the 70s. We were curious how we could connect our aesthetic perspectives in a way that would introduce new ways of seeing to each of our communities,” says Stéphane Danant.

A residence in the truest sense, this collaborative gallery swap will offer fleeting immersions of each gallery’s identity, from the programming exhibited to the scenography.

From October 16 through November 4, 2023, Demisch Danant will embrace the Galerie Anne-Sophie Duval space on Quai Malaquais, right across the Palais du Louvre, along with the storefront around the corner on Rue Bonaparte.

This will only be the second time Demisch Danant has presented in gallery co-founder Stéphane Danant’s home city of Paris–the first of which was Place des Vosges, an exhibition in 2012 featuring the surrealist, pioneering works of Maria Pergay

Demisch Danant’s curatorial program will present a selection of over sixty pieces from the 1950-1970’s, honoring the era of French design that the gallery has been championing for the last twenty years. Designers on view include Maria Pergay, Louis Sognot, Maxime Old, Jacques Dumond, Joseph-André Motte, Colette Gueden, René-Jean Caillette, Etienne Fermigier, Geneviève Dangles, Claude de Muzac, Serge Mansau, Bernard Govin, Jacques Charpentier, Michel Boyer, Janette Laverrière, Janine Abraham. The furniture selection will be complemented by a series of artworks by painter Alain Jacquet, a leading force of the Pop Art movement. Contemporary artist Jean-Baptiste Caron will transform the gallery's window display around the corner, on rue Bonaparte, with a multi-media, site-specific installation titled Tout crépuscule est une aube (Every twilight is a dawn).

Later in New York, from November 6 through December 23, 2023, Galerie Anne-Sophie Duval will transform the Demisch Danant interior for a solo exhibition in honor of the late Vassil Ivanoff, an avant-garde artist widely admired as one of the first ceramic expressionists of the 20th century. As fervent supporters and advocates of Ivanoff’s practice, this will be the second solo showcase of the artist presented by Galerie Anne-Sophie Duval–the first of which was in celebration of the gallery’s 50th anniversary last year (2022) in Paris. In addition to these works, the gallery will also offer a select collection of pieces that represent their visual vernacular at large.

“Stéphane, Suzanne and I first joked at the thought of swapping galleries a few years ago when I was exploring the idea of showcasing Ivanoff’s work in the US. Not long after that, we realized that the idea could be possible after all – and moreover – presented a thrilling opportunity for each of our galleries to reach like-minded audiences in different cities,” says Julie Blum.

About Galerie Anne-Sophie Duval
Founded in 1972 by Anne-Sophie Duval, the gallery, which specializes in Art Deco and 20th century decorative arts, has become a key address for collectors and decorators over the past fifty years.

Passionate and erudite, Anne-Sophie Duval was one of the first to rediscover the great names of Art Deco: Pierre Chareau, Jean-Michel Frank, Jean Dunand, A.A. Rateau, Eileen Gray, Paul Dupré-Lafon, or André Groult. It is thanks to the profound originality of her vision and her selection, which is both demanding and modern, that the gallery has acquired an international reputation.

Since 2008, her daughter, Julie Blum, has continued to highlight the incredible creativity of this period. Anxious to perpetuate the spirit of the place, she continues this spirit of rediscovery of the major works of the masters of Art Deco without forgetting to highlight the work of many artists, men and women, who contributed to the renewal of modern forms.

The Anne-Sophie Duval gallery has organized several exhibitions, including a retrospective of Etienne Cournault (2008), an exhibition of UAM and Bauhaus, a cross-view of French and German modernists (2009), The Liberation of Form on post-war ceramists (2010), the retrospective of the work of Elisabeth Joulia in 2011 and that of Mithé Espelt in 2021.

The gallery regularly participates in major international fairs, and enthusiastically lends "iconic" works to prestigious institutions such as the Musée des Arts Décoratifs (MAD) in Paris in 2019 for Modern Maharajah or the Bard Center in New York for the Eileen Gray retrospective in 2020.
